Variable side pools

Subject:   Why not variable side pools?
Forum:   BGonline.org Forums

I'm curious as to why side pools are fixed to a specific amount. If they
were structured similar to all-in poker bets, you could bet $20 or $2000 or
whatever. It would allow a lot more action, both horizontally and
vertically (more players and bigger pools).

Michael Crane  writes:

I have been running optional variable side pools for 20 years! All I do is
record what SP each player is in (they can only choose one) and then, I pay
out 75%-25% to the two players who go farthest in their SP. If the top
position is shared by two or more players the entire SP pot is split
equally between them. If there is just one top placed player and more than
one player shares the second position, the 25% is split equally.

I have in the past gone for three at the most, High, Medium and Low. This
way, players can 'invest' whatever they like. I have a Registration
spreadsheet that shows who is and what sum is in each pool so players can
make their choice.
