Magriel's book was vastly ahead of any written before and during it's
intitial release period. Today, it still remains a superb text on checker
play and even today's intermediates will improve thru detailed study of
it. 20-25 years ago when I played BG almost constantly, I'll admit that
I basically had Magriel's book memorized!
However, it is the almost total neglect of the doubling cube that
prevents Magriel's book from standing alone at the top of the heap.
Perhaps Magriel didn't feel that he knew enough about the cube 27 years
ago to put it all in print in a big book. Perhaps Magriel didn't want to
give all sorts of cube secrets away back then. Perhaps Magriel was
intending to publish a text of the scope of "Backgammon" concerning the
cube but that didn't happen.
I suspect all 3 of my perhaps are at least partly true.
