After 30 years the American backgammon public could reasonably expect Bruce
Becker's quite awful "Backgammon for Blood" to be but a distant memory.
Sadly just when you least expected it, the title, if not the author has
resurfaced. The US publisher Skyhorse had intended to re-release Becker's
original this autumn. I have no idea why they would want to do this, other
than the fact that it is endorsed by George Bush but then does anyone
really want such an endorsement??
Anyway they discovered that the artwork from the original had gone missing
and they didn't want to go to the expense of redrawing it. At this point
they came up with the bright idea of purchasing the rights to my new
beginner's book "Backgammon to Win" and re-titling it "Backgammon for
Blood". As the rights are owned by my UK publisher, and they are in the
business of making money, I could nothing to prevent this and so on Monday
"Backgammon for Blood" will once more become available in the US.
All I can say is that if you ignore the title you will find the content
somewhat more accurate and informative than the original. The only
difference between the UK and US versions of the book is that my criticism
of the original "BG for Blood" has been tactfully removed from the US
version. George Bush might struggle with some of the arithmetic but then he
seems to struggle with most things, including the English language!
For those who do read it I hope you enjoy it.
With Kind Regards
Chris
