Lortz: Double ... now: An Authentic Cube Remedy From:   Chuck Bower Address:   bower@astro.indiana.edu Date:   2 January 2004 Subject:   Book Question #1 Forum:   GammOnLine I was at the Meeses' house the other night and saw a book I've never even heard of: Dr. J.L's Elixir presents DOUBLE...now: An Authentic Cube Remedy by James Lortz. Written in 1992 (published in 1995), this book uses Expert Backgammon rollout results plus algorithms, equations, reference positions, etc. to teach the right time to double and take/pass. In the Introduction (which is more like a preface with acknowledgements) he mentions Kazaross (who provided motivation), Heinrich (who provided positions), Tom Johnson (for writing EXBG), and Robertie (for his work Intermediate Backgammon, another book I've never heard of). Anyone know anything about this book?? Neil Kazaross  writes: The book is rather well organised and would be a good value for reference positions if rolled out by today's bots. Jeremy Bagai  writes: Walter Trice savaged it in a review in Chicago Point a while back. I'm not at home so I can't provide the reference. It was very funny. After concluding that the book was worthless, he advised anyone unable to overcome their morbid curiosity to take some dramamine before opening it, to counteract the effects of exposure to four or more fonts per page.   Did you find the information in this article useful?           Do you have any comments you'd like to add?
