I play on Jordan's DailyGammon site and enjoy it. Since it is a turn based
site and your opponent is not waiting for your to move, you can take as
much time as you want to analyze the position. There is a computer
guessing function that takes some getting used to (ie, computer moves for
opponent a few moves, if opponent actually makes a different move than
computer guessed, the position is rolled back.) I find in most other
online sites there is a lot of pressure to play "speed backgammon" but not
on DailyGammon. While there are a lot of beginning players on the site,
the top 100 or so players are good. There are also a variety of
tournaments with different match lengths and time limits.

Jordan has put a tremendous amount of work in developing and maintaining
the site. Give it a try and see if you like it. The price is right ...
free ... with no pop up ads. http://www.dailygammon.com

I'll put in a plug for Jordan's fine site (dailygammon.com), which is the
best of the turn based sites that I've seen. He's kept the technology
simple--i.e. no shockwave, java, flash, additional software, etc. needed--
which means you can run it anytime, anywhere. At the same time, the play
is elegant, with some smart features to ease and speed up play.

At one point I had close to 200 matches going at DailyGammon. I then got
ill and was unable to play for over a month. I ended up losing all those
matches on time and my rating dropped from 2000+ into the 1300s. Since
then I've kept my concurrent matches to about 20 (and it's taken FOREVER
to get back into the 1900s :)

One final note. There are a LOT of poor players on these sites, and the
ratings are generally quite higher than at other backgammon sites. But
Jordan's site is attracting more and more strong players, so it's not hard
to get a competitive game. If any of you are up for a match over there,
feel free to invite me. The nick is Chase.
