From Better Backgammon, by Tim Holland

White to play 5-1.

The correct play is to bear one man from your 5 point and move one man from the 3 point to the 2 point. Assuming that Black does not bear off all three of his men on his turn, by using the ace to move from the 3 to the 2 point you increase your chances of bearing off your remaining three men by 25 percent. This is because you have given yourself the added possibility of winning with double 2s as well as double 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s.
