From Backgammon, the Cruelest Game, by Barclay Cooke and Jon Bradshaw

White to play 6-1.

The 6-1 should be played by bearing off the 6 and moving the 1 from the 4 point to the 3 point. If he makes the recommended move, white’s bad subsequent rolls are double 6’s, double 5’s, and double 4’s.

But if he simply takes the man off the 6 point and leaves six men on his 4 point, he will be vulnerable to a 6-3, 5-3, 4-3, or 2-3, so he will have eight potential bad rolls instead of three. Furthermore, should the horror roll occur — that is, double 6’s, double 5’s, or double 4’s — white will still have nine men off, and if his blot is missed, his double-game potential is strong.
