Black to play 5-4.

Bring two men from white’s 12 point to black’s 9 and 8 points. Black is exposed to any 8, but it is a better play than bringing one man from white’s 1 point out to white’s 10 point, where black would be vulnerable to a direct 3. Black has acquired nine pips (or points) and should not relinquish them lightly.

The one drawback to our recommended play * is that black adds an irrelevant man to his 8 point, but the play is preferred for the extra builder he acquires on his 9 point.
