From Backgammon, the Cruelest Game, by Barclay Cooke and Jon Bradshaw

Black to play 4-1.

Bring one man from white’s 12 point to black’s 9 point and drop another man from black’s 6 point to black’s 5 point. This is a good offensive move. Again black is exposed to a 4, and double 4’s would capture both men, but it is still the best play. The problem with both the 4-1 and the 2-1 is that nothing constructive is immediately accomplished. Black is only preparing to make points and is therefore vulnerable. Even so, should the blots not be hit, black’s position is potentially strong.
