Black to play 6-2.

Bring one man from white’s 12 point all the way to black’s 5 point.

To bring one man from white’s 1 point out to white’s 9 point is not as good a play. Both plays can be hit by a 4, though double 1’s cannot hit the 6-2 brought out to white’s 9 point. Although double 1’s can hit the exposed man on black’s 5 point, a good player would never make this play, so the odds in both instances are even.

At this early stage in the game, it is well worth gambling to secure black’s 5 point. Black is exposed only to a roll of 4 or a combination totaling 4. Any other alternatives are even less satisfactory.
