Introduction

Tissona gets an early lead in development by an opening 31 followed by a 22. He overplays the latter a bit, giving Royset a slight chance to hit a shot and escape a back checker. Tissona rolls another strong double, 44, which allows him to build a broken prime and the 16-anchor. Royset hits, risking a return hit, which is not entirely justified. Tissona correctly doubles, and Royset correctly takes. Tissona misses an opportunity to play more aggressively against Royset's single back checker, and after a series of difficult play decisions for both players Royset's brings it home. The race that follows is quite close. The bear-in is not very interesting, but the bear-off shows some more interesting play decisions. Tissona makes a few minor technical errors, but wins in the end and takes a 4-0 lead.

Casper van der Tak: This combination of a little bit of everything used to be more popular some years ago. 13/11(2) 6/4(2) is strongest, and also 24/22(2) 6/4(2) is better. I play 13/11(2) 6/4(2) in similar early opening positions, unless my opponent has made a strong point (bar-point, 5-point or 4-point) and the score argues for reducing the gammon rates.

Annotation

Casper van der Tak: Either this or B/15. The drawback of the connected move B/21 22/16 is that it leaves more double hitting numbers, while the advantage is that it gives more return hits after Royset's single hits and that it offers more opportunities to make the point. Since Tissona's board is strong some of the power of Royset's double hits is mitigated, so I'd play B/21 22/16 as well.

Kit Woolsey: Both the double and the take seem clear. Tissona has the huge threat of hitting the blot on Royset's three point, and if he hits he will probably lost his market by a lot. If he misses, he still has his strong board to back him up. Royset is doing fine in the race, has only one man back, and Tissona's bar point is open so that back checker can escape in one roll.

Christian Toth: Esthetically, 16/15 13/7 is so beautiful that it could hardly be the wrong play. It doesn't matter what the bots might say, since beauty in my mind is clearly more reliable than mathematics. I always love to make these kinds of moves...... and double the next roll! Still, if you approach the position scientifically you can also argue in favor of this play. Red would love to roll a 4 anyway. If he rolls one, he will have to survive hits all over the board, while with the move played, running after 4s would be much healthier for red. This move or even 13/7 8/7 (truly less beautiful by the way) must be the world class choice.

Kit Woolsey: I agree that one of the slotting plays is called for. It is very dangerous for Royset to hit now, but in a roll or two Royset will put his board together and the opportunity for a slotting play will have gone. Tissona has the chance to make the full prime and lock up the game. The key is the race. If Tissona were well ahead in the race this wouldn't be necessary -- all he would have to do is cruise home safely. However, the race is very close, so Royset escaping is Tissona's biggest worry.

Casper van der Tak: I agree with Tissona's play and do not understand GNU's evaluation here. Royset is still vulnerable, and there is a lot of wood in the zone, so it looks clear to attack.

After performing a rollout, the boss (Albert Silver)* asked me to have a look again at this position, since the rollouts confirm that not attacking is better. What could be going on is that Tissona needs to be careful not to jeopardize his lead in the race. 13/9 13/11 brings in attack material more slowly, and may result in a more safe attack a few turns from now (POH). Meanwhile, he keeps his chances in the race and the advantage of having escaped all his checkers. This is only clear to me after seeing the rollout results, I am sure I would have attacked OTB.

Kit Woolsey: Attacking isn't necessary. Royset's checker can escape just as easily from the ace point or the two point as it can from the three point, and Tissona loses a lot if he is hit back, particularly since most of Royset's hits also make an inner board point. Also, Tissona doesn't have the ammunition to carry out a blitz.

Casper van der Tak: An exceedingly tough decision. It would have been clear to hit if Royset had covered one of his blots. As it stands, Royset has three plays: B/24 6/4, B/23 4/3 and B/22*. If Royset does not hit, his play seems a bit stronger than B/24 6/4 since it does not leave any blots in the home board and more importantly, for the coverage of White's stripped 8-point, making it more difficult to cover the blot on the three. Also, after the 3-point has been made, being on the 23 has the advantage of making it more difficult for Royset to build his bar-point. It is a bit more prone to attack than B/24 6/4 and therefore loses more gammons.

B/22* looks very wild, but increases Royset's wins, making it very close. I guess I'd have played Royset's move.

It is an interesting position, and the right play depends a lot on the score: B/22* at DMP and Gammon-Go, B/23 4/3 for money, and B/24 6/4 at Gammon-Save.

Christian Toth: Usually in such a circumstance, I would spend some time thinking, and finally, without coming to any definite conclusion, would just close my eyes and hit. I find it impossible to differentiate between the two best plays, so when in doubt I always go for the apparently riskier choice. It is just a way to try to banish my own fear. In the long run, if you try to constantly make safer moves, a time will come when truly tough and risky situations arise and you will not be ready to take the necessary decision. Fear must not only be controlled, but actively fought and dealt with. In my limited understanding, there is no greater sin than fear, and I don't just mean fear in backgammon.

Kit Woolsey: Very difficult. Usually it is right to hit in this sort of situation provided it isn't completely suicidal, since one can see a definite route to winning by hitting. What makes this position complicated is that the race is close enough so Royset can see a definite route to winning by not hittng. I honestly have no idea what is right, but at the table I'm pretty sure I would have hit.
