Strategy--Checker play
I continually see two technical errors made by the high intermediate/low
open player -- sometimes a dozen or more times in a single match. They are
(1) killing checkers and (2) failure to slot safely in the home board.
The first is self-explanatory -- Boot Camp has a chapter as I recall. Bury
a checker on the ace point rather than fighting for outfield control or
leaving some extra shots. Soon you're playing with 12 then 10 then 8
checkers against 15.
The second is while building a board with the hope of hitting a shot and
containing the checker. Folks come up with the most amazing reasons for not
slotting the point they need to make. Robertie discusses this in Advanced
BG. Just slot.
A third -- less common -- is failing to slot the back end of the five-prime
when trying to contain a single checker.
Most common error at the high open level? Playing too quickly and missing
candidate plays.
