From Backgammon, the Cruelest Game, by Barclay Cooke and Jon Bradshaw

Black to play 2-1.

The principle is the same as in the previous diagram; black must force white to break his anchor. The correct play is to move one man from white’s 4 point up to his 6 point and to move the 1 from black’s 5 point to black’s 4 point, leaving two blots in his inner board.

This play gives white 3’s and 4’s to move, and black hopes that white will be able to hit one of his men. The oddity of this play should not deter the beginner. It is logical and the strongest threat to white’s position. It also shows that black has devoted some thought to his game and is alert to the potentialities of all rolls.
