From Backgammon, the Cruelest Game, by Barclay Cooke and Jon Bradshaw

Black to play 3-2.

Bring two men down from white’s 12 point, placing one of them on black’s 11 point and the other on black’s 10 point. Since black is vulnerable only to a roll of 9 or 10 by white, he is relatively secure and in an excellent position to create additional points.

There is an alternative — bringing one man from white’s 12 point to black’s 11 point and dropping one man from black’s 8 point to black’s 5 point. If black is not hit, he is in a good position to make his 5 point on his next roll. But a roll of 4 will hit and double 4’s could be a serious blow. The first play is superior.
